Shared Future

That this Assembly states its concern at the failure of the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister to meet its own deadlines for the publication of a draft strategy for Cohesion, Sharing and Integration, incorporating the Racial Equality Strategy; expresses its concern at the marginalisation of the existing Shared Future Framework and Action Plan and the resultant absence of a clear policy on community relations; and demands that the Department urgently brings forward detailed proposals for addressing the continued problems and consequences arising from division and segregation.

Review of Environmental Governance (passed with amendment)

That this Assembly expresses its concern at the failure of the previous Minister of the Environment to take forward the recommendations of the 'Review of Environmental Governance'; believes that the Northern Ireland Environment Agency is not adequate to deal with the challenges facing Northern Ireland; and calls for the establishment of an independent Environmental Protection Agency which must become fully operational within the lifetime of this Assembly.

Omagh Bombing (passed with amendment)

That this Assembly calls for the establishment of a formal, cross-border, legally binding process, designed to secure full disclosure from the Intelligence Services and Security forces in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, to establish what relevant information they had before, and immediately after, the attack which killed 29 civilians and two unborn children on 15 August 1998.

Planning in Residential Areas

That this Assembly calls on the Minister of the Environment to review, and where necessary to amend, planning policies to protect the character of residential areas and to create mixed and balanced residential communities.

Free and Fair Elections in Zimbabwe

That this Assembly condemns the threats and violence against the opposition in Zimbabwe; recognises that an environment for free and fair elections does not exist; expresses alarm that Morgan Tsvangirai felt he had no alternative but to withdraw from the presidential run-off scheduled for 27 June 2008; and calls on the international community, including the United Nations and the African Union, to take all available steps to ensure democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Zimbabwe.

Shared Future

That this Assembly expresses its concern at the marginalisation of 'A Shared Future - Policy and Strategic Framework for Good Relations in Northern Ireland', and the first triennial action plan 2006-2009; and calls on the Executive to bring forward a comprehensive programme of actions to facilitate the creation of a shared and integrated society. [01 September 2008]

Human Rights in China

That this Assembly notes that the Chinese authorities pledged to improve human rights standards on winning the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games; further notes that the human rights infringements during the Games; urges the Chinese Government to live up to its promises; appeals to the Chinese Government to engage with the Tibetan Government in Exile to reach a peaceful solution; and calls on the Executive, in line with international practice, to raise the issue of human rights in any dealings with Chinese Government representatives. Marine Protection Bill

That this Assembly calls on the Executive to commit fully to the policies of the United Kingdom Marine Bill and to develop a Northern Ireland Marine Bill to address properly devolved responsibilities, including: to allow the creation of a locally accountable Northern Ireland Marine Management Organisation; to address the need for a new system of marine spatial planning based on the ecosystem approach; to integrate fisheries management; and to ensure better protection of marine wildlife through a comprehensive network of Marine Protected Areas by 2012. Protection of the Irish Hare

That this Assembly calls on the Minister of the Environment to grant full protection to the Irish hare under the review of the Wildlife Order. [01 September 2008]

Costs of Division

That this Assembly notes the Deloitte Report 'Research into the financial cost of the Northern Ireland divide', commissioned by the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister; and calls on the Executive to ensure that the potential to address both the direct and embedded costs of division, and the opportunity to provide shared and integrated goods, services and facilities, are fully realised within the Programme for Government and the Comprehensive Spending Review. That this Assembly expresses its concern at the failure of the previous Minister of the Environment to take forward the recommendations of the 'Review of Environmental Governance'; believes that the Northern Ireland Environment Agency is not adequate to deal with the challenges facing Northern Ireland; and calls on the Executive to re-consider this matter urgently.
