Justice Minister David Ford

Justice Minister David Ford has reminded those who wish to buy or use fireworks that they need a fireworks licence.

The Minister said that as the Halloween season approaches many people will be planning parties and that the legal and safe use of fireworks must be paramount. Applications for a licence in time for the Halloween period must be submitted no later than 21 October 2010.

David Ford said: "Fireworks can be a very enjoyable part of Halloween. There is no doubt that many people will be planning displays over the coming months, whether it is in your own back yard or an organised public display.

"What everyone needs to know, is that if you plan to buy or use fireworks you will need a licence from my Department. This is a legal requirement and by not obtaining one, you will be breaking the law."

It is also illegal to buy fireworks from anyone other than a registered supplier. The Minister outlined the real risk in buying from illegal sources, David Ford continued: "Don't be tempted to buy fireworks from illegal sources. To do so is putting your safety and perhaps the safety of others at risk."

Retailers of fireworks must be registered and must display, prominently at the point of sale, their current Licence or Certificate of Registration.

The Minister concluded: "These requirements are not an attempt to spoil anyone's fun, rather by complying with the law and following the safety code, I hope everyone can have fun and avoid terrible injuries this Halloween."

Licence applications can be downloaded from http://www.nidirect.gov.uk
