Ford welcomes important first meeting with Police Federation4.25.00pm GMT Mon 26th Apr 2010
Justice Minister David Ford has today commended the commitment and bravery of police officers as they continue to protect the community. The Minister was speaking following a meeting with the Police Federation Chairman Terry Spence where he discussed a range of issues, including the dissident republican threat. Mr Ford said, "The safety and welfare of our police officers and the community in Northern Ireland is of paramount importance. I want to recognise the courage and bravery our officers show on a daily basis, often in very difficult circumstances. They deserve the support and co-operation of the entire community. "I found my discussions today with the Police Federation incredibly helpful. As representatives of police officers, it is important that I benefit from their insight, knowledge and experience. Terry has made it very clear what issues are concerning his colleagues in the Federation. I am grateful for this opportunity to meet and I anticipate many future meetings. Our ongoing conversation around local circumstances, priorities and needs is another positive example of the difference devolution will make."
