Ford hails Orde comments on police independence12.34.00pm GMT Fri 20th Nov 2009
Alliance Leader David Ford has said that local politicians should heed comments from the President of the Association of Chief Police Officers, Sir Hugh Orde, on operational independence. Sir Hugh warned that police chief constables may resign if a Tory government tries to place the police under local political control. David Ford said: "Sir Hugh's comments are timely and should act as a warning to any local politician who would seek to impinge upon the operational independence of the Chief Constable. "The principles of independence on policing apply as much in Northern Ireland as they do in Great Britain. "Political policing must never be allowed in Northern Ireland. Local politicians must realise the massive damage any action or perceived action of this nature could do. "Operational independence helps maintain vital public confidence in our police."
