Ford shocked at South Antrim school repair backlog4.30.00pm GMT Tue 25th Nov 2008 Alliance Party Leader, David Ford MLA has expressed his shock and annoyance that there is a backlog of school repairs worth £217 million across Northern Ireland. Within the South Antrim constituency these add up to about £6.8 million. David Ford MLA said: "I am staggered by these figures. It is scandalous that so many schools need urgent repairs but have been left waiting by Caitriona Ruane. "Our schools are meant to be safe places for children, not accidents waiting to happen. A headmaster of a primary school recently expressed his frustration to a colleague of mine at the lack of maintenance at his school: he said that he spent as much time doing the plumbing and electrical work as teaching. "In these days of health and safety as a key priority, I am amazed at these statistics. Now that the Executive has started to meet again, I trust that they will work to ensure these repairs are carried out as quickly as possible." The figures were published in The Irish News on Tuesday 18 November 2008. In Antrim Borough the total high priority maintenance backlog adds up to £4,060,620. In Newtownabbey Borough the total high priority maintenance backlog adds up to £2,572,372.
