Ford criticises killing of red kite

3.52.00pm GMT Mon 8th Sep 2008

Alliance leader David Ford MLA has condemned the killing of a red kite which was one of 27 released into the wild in July by the RSPB as part of a reintroduction programme. The bird was shot dead and discovered in a field in Castlewellan.

David Ford MLA said: "I completely condemn this shooting. It is disgraceful that somebody shot this bird that posed no threat to man or livestock.

"The red kite is an endangered species and the purpose of reintroduction programmes such as this one is to increase their numbers but sadly there is one less of these magnificent birds in the wild.

"I would call on the Minister for Environment to increase the penalties for those who kill endangered species as the current punishments do not appear to be strong enough.

"I would call on anybody with any information about this shooting to contact the police."
