Alliance leader David Ford MLA has paid tribute to Menzies Campbell who has resigned as leader of the Liberal Democrats with immediate effect.

South Antrim MLA David Ford said: "Menzies is enormously respected as an expert in foreign and defence affairs.

"In the period before the Iraq war began he represented the majority of the people of the UK in his determined and detailed questioning of the Prime Minister, despite the fact he was suffering from a serious illness, he earned wide spread respect across the community and across the political spectrum for his courage, honesty and decency.

"On behalf of the Alliance party I would like to wish him well for the future."
